Question Listing for Vessel Name Changes
Question:
How do I change a vessel’s name?
Answer:
When a vessel is registered in Liberia and there is a change of name without a change in vessel ownership, although the vessel does not need to be reregistered, a new Certificate of Registry must be issued. When there is a name change, the following procedure shall be followed:
  1. Approval of Name Change: Every new vessel name must be cleared in accordance with Section 47 of the Maritime Law. A letter from the vessel s owner requesting approval must be submitted to LISCR Registration in New York. This letter should state the ship's present name, its proposed new name and its official number.
  2. Consent of Preferred Mortgagee: If the ship is subject to one or more Liberian ship mortgages, a written consent from each mortgagee, agreeing to the proposed change of name, must be filed with LISCR Registration before approval is granted
Question:
What fees are charged to change a vessel’s name?
Answer:
The fees required for changing a vessel's name depend on the net registered tonnage of the ship.

When a ship is entering the Liberian Flag under a new name, there is no charge for that change of name.

A check for the change of name fee, payable to The Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Maritime Affairs, R.L., should be sent with the application.

Question:
What are the Certificates issued for a vessel name change?
Answer:
When the change of name has been approved, the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Maritime Affairs will issue a Provisional Certificate of Registry, valid for a period of six months from the date of the change of name, or, if the ship already has a Provisional Certificate of Registry valid for more than six months, a new Provisional Certificate will be issued to expire on the same date.
Question:
How can I reserve a vessel name?
Answer:
Only one vessel in the Liberian registry may have the same name (with the exception of stricken vessels). An applicant may wish to check the availability of a name and reserve that name, before beginning the vessel registration application process. There is no charge for this name reservation service.
